The Advisory Board

The NISR Advisory Board consults with the Director and Executive Board to develop and implement policy. The Advisory Board also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sports Reform.

Dr. Linda Bensel-Myers
Associate Professor, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee. Dr. Bensel-Myers is presently the Director of the Drake Group, a national faculty coalition seeking to end academic corruption in our colleges and universities. Linda’s plight against academic corruption at the University of Tennessee has received national exposure. She is presently authoring a book on her experiences.
Bob Bigelow
Winchester, Massachusetts. Bob Bigelow is a former NBA player and frequent critic of youth sports. His book Just Let the Kids Play: How to Top Other Adults from Ruining Your Child’s Fun and Success in Youth Sports is a superb analysis of what currently ails athletics at the youth level. Bob is a tireless worker for the right of young athletes to enjoy the games they play. His book provides thoughtful recommendations and reforms for our present youth sports culture.
Dale Brown
Dale Brown Enterprises, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dale Brown, legendary basketball coach at LSU, has become a frequent critic of college athletics. Through motivational speeches and participation in national forums, Dale has spoken passionately and persuasively about changes he believes are necessary to reform sports at the collegiate level.
Bill Cushing
Community member in Bethlehem, New York. Bill Cushing has been coaching recreational, travel and scholastic sports teams for over 15 years working with 5 year olds through 20 year olds in soccer and basketball. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Albany Sports Foundation, YMCA, Bethlehem Soccer Club and Bethlehem Basketball Club. Bill is a former New York State Emergency Medical Technician and has been involved with sports training care.
Dan Doyle
Director, Institute for International Sport, Kingston, Rhode Island. Dan Doyle is Director and founder of the Institute for International Sport. This organization emphasizes the development of sportsmanship and leadership skills in young athletes from around the world. Responsible for the development of a National Sportsmanship Day as well as the International Scholar Athlete Games, Dan is focused upon providing positive change in our present sports culture. He presently is co-authoring a book entitled The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting.
Fred Engh
President, National Alliance for Youth Sports, West Palm Beach, Florida. Fred Engh is the President and founder of the National Alliance for Youth Sports. This organization is seeking to reform the culture of youth sports by training and certifying youth coaches and sports administrators. The prevention and education tactics used by the Alliance have been very effective in combating the many problems that hinder our youths from having positive sports experiences. Fred’s book, Why Johnny Hates Sports: Why Organized Youth Sports are Failing Our Children and What We Can Do About It, is considered to be a classic work in the area of sports reform.
Dr. Jon Ericson
Professor Emeritus, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Jon Ericson is a former Provost at Drake University. A long time critic of intercollegiate athletics, Jon was the founder of the Drake Group, the national faculty coalition fighting against academic corruption. He organized and presided over the Drake Group Meetings in Iowa several years ago and was asked to testify in front of the recent Knight Commission Meeting on Intercollegiate Athletics.
Dr. John Gerdy
A Visiting Professor of Sports Administration at Ohio University, Dr. Gerdy is a former collegiate basketball All-American, professional player, NCAA legislative assistant, and Associate Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. He has authored a number of pivotal books in the area of sports reform including Sports: The All-American Addiction and Sports In School: The

Dr. Michael Gray
Professor of Physical Education, Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, Kentucky. Dr. Michael Gray is a worldwide lecturer on issues related to youth sports especially as they relate to the effects of stress on the behavior of children and adolescents. A board member with National Alliance for Youth Sports, Michael has also served as the Director of the Human Performance Laboratory, and Past Director of the US Olympic Committee Medical Site.
Ramogi Huma
Chairman, The College Athletes Coalition, Sherman Oaks, California. Ramogi Huma is a former collegiate football player at UCLA and is the Chairman of the Collegiate Athletes Coalition. The goal of this group is to organize college athletes in order to give them a stronger voice about health insurance, scholarship stipends, and the general working conditions of athletes. Ramogi is a tireless and committed worker for the rights of athletes in our colleges and universities.
Marc Isenberg
Director, Athlete Network, Los Angeles, California. Marc Isenberg has been a frequent critic of our sports culture especially as it relates to issues of sports gambling and commercialism. He has authored several articles on these issues and his work is frequently quoted in newspapers and magazines. His book, The Student Athlete Survival Guide is one of the best manuals available for advising young people about the potential problems and pitfalls they may face as high school and college athletes.
Dr. David Janda
Director, Institute for Preventative Sports Medicine, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dr. David Janda is the founder and Director of the internationally recognized Institute for Preventatitive Sports Medicine. An international leader in the area of sports injury prevention, Dr. Janda authored an award-winning book in this area entitled The Awakening of a Surgeon. In the book, he chronicles his journey through the area of sports injury prevention. He discusses the forces that prevent our athletes from using the safest equipment and the best teaching methods for limiting sports injuries.
Dr. Kenneth Reed
An expert in sports administration and sport policy, Dr. Kenneth Reed has focused his career on reforming our sports culture through a variety of sports policy initiatives, especially in the win-at-all costs mentality that pervades athletics today. He teaches sports studies courses and has published numerous well received articles and columns on contemporary sports issues. Presently, he is the regular sports issues columnist for Mile High Sports magazine.
Brian Porto, Esq
Attorney at Law, Windsor, Vermont. Attorney Brian Porto has authored a number of provocative pieces in law reviews regarding legal challenges to our present system of intercollegiate sports. An outspoken critic of commercialism in sports today, Brian is presently authoring a book on the topic.
Cathy Redmond
National Coalition Against Violent Athletes (NCAVA), Littleton, Colorado. Kathy Redmond is the founder and Director of the National Coalition Against Violent Athletes. The goal of the coalition is to educate the public on a variety of issues involving athletes and violence and to promote positive development among athletes. As a victim herself of a violent act perpetrated by an athlete, Kathy has become an outspoken and persuasive critic of our present “jock” culture
Dr. Alan Sack
Professor, University of New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Alan Sack has been an outspoken critic of intercollegiate athletics and the demise of amateurism. A former Notre Dame football player, Alan is known for his articulate and passionate examination of the problems facing athletes in our present win-at-all-costs sports culture. His co-authored book, College Athletes for Hire: The Evolution and Legacy of the NCAA’s Amateur Myth, is considered a classic in the area of sports reform.
Marcia Sage, Esq
Director, Sports Ethics Institute, Laurel, Maryland. Attorney Marcia Sage is the founder and Director of the Sports Ethics Institute. A tax lawyer and ethicist, Marcia created the Institute to raise and explore the many ethical issues that arise in our sports culture today. The Institute has already held two summits on important wide-ranging ethical issues in sports. The discourse at these two summits has contributed significantly to ideas about sports reform in our present society.
Dr. Ellen Staurowsky
Professor, Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. Dr. Ellen Staurowsky is a former college athletic director and an outspoken critic of our present sports culture. Co-author of the highly regarded book, College Athletes for Hire: The Evolution and Legacy of the NCAA’s Amateur Myth, Ellen is a leading voice in the debate regarding sports reform in our country. She is an expert regarding the controversy surrounding amateurism in intercollegiate athletics and a specialist in the area of Title IX legislation.
Jim Thompson
Director, Positive Coaching Alliance, Stanford, California. Jim Thompson is the founder and Director of the Positive Coaching Alliance. The overall goal of the Alliance is to provide a teaching culture in which young athletes will love to play sports. Jim has been a tireless worker in advocating more rational approaches to the coaching of young athletes and his methods are being widely adopted. His book, Positive Coaching: Building Character and Self-Esteem Through Sports provides strategies to motivate and inspire athletes to reach their full potential.
Dr. Charles Yesalis
Professor, Penn State University, State College, Pennsylvania. Dr. Charles Yesalis is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of performance enhancing drugs. He is a frequently called upon lecturer in his field, has testified before Congress, and has served as a consultant to numerous federal agencies such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Food and Drug Administration and the US Office of National Drug Control Policy. His book, The Steroids Game: An Expert’s Inside Look at Anabolic Steroid Use in Sports is an authoritative work on this important topic.
